VitaDuo, composed of Vitaly Vatulya (saxophone) and Maria Nemtsova (piano) has been recognized as one of the most interesting ensembles performing in the chamber music world today. The rare duo combination of saxophone and piano was formed in 2006, when VitaDuo won their first prize at the prestigious Primavera Classica festival in Moscow.

Later they founded the famous Music for Peace Project, which seeks to benefit young musicians who live in today’s conflict zones by using the convening power of music as a vehicle to maximize the benefits of international and cross-cultural contacts between youth and young adult populations. Through music, Music for Peace aims to bring individuals from all backgrounds and social statuses together in a relaxed and natural environment.

Constantly in search of new music, arrangements, and diverse directions of the classical saxophone repertoire, VitaDuo have performed in more than fifty cities all over the world such as Moscow (Russia), Tel-Aviv (Israel), Prague (Czech Republic), Tunis (Tunisia), Yerevan (Armenia), Tbilisi (Georgia), Vienna (Austria), Belgrade (Serbia), and Podgorica (Montenegro), among others.

As individual soloists their carriers have seen concerts all over the world. Maria has won many international piano competitions and has played on international stages such as Carnegie Hall (New York), Wigmore Hall (London), National Centre of Performing Arts in Beijing, and Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre. Vitaly is the winner of more than fifteen prestigious international competitions and has played in the Moscow International House of Music and the Great Conservatoire Hall, Philharmonic Concert Hall in Vilnius, Bruckner House in Linz, and others.

Le Temps magazine in Tunisia said after one of their performances: “The duo plunges the audience into shock with their virtuosity, ensemble quality and one breath for two; the two artists have offered a moment of pure delight where the emphasis was on the encounter between past and present through compositions that fought for force and beauty.” (R. Medelgi)

VitaDuo has performed and lectured across Europe, including performances at festivals including Slavic Spring in Prague, Primavera Classica in Moscow, SaxArte in Italy, Autumn in Carthage in Tunis, the Rachmaninov International Festival in Tambov in Russia, and A Tempo in Montenegro.

The duo has a varying collection of classical and contemporary chamber music masterpieces in their repertoire, and always seeks to bring a new and exciting experience to audiences.

Reverse Perspective is a full-length theatrical dance production directed and choreographed by Jonah Bokaer that unites the live performance of VitaDuo with the choreography of Bokaer, set to music by composer Polina Nazaykinskaya. Thematically, the piece explores the journey of an artist and reflects on our civil society today.

This special collaboration between Jonah Bokaer Choreography and Momentum Artists was presented at the Hudson Eye Festival on August 30, 2020. For more information, see the Special Project page here.

Re:fórmers Festival of Topical Classical Music

Vitaly and Maria founded the Re:fórmers Festival of Topical Classical Music in 2017, which seeks to bring new interpretations and collaborations to a non-traditional audience through bold compositions and theatrical performances. The festival was inspired by their being part of a whole generation of young Russian performers who grew up believing that there was more to classical music beyond virtuoso tours, and that the art of performing classical music can continue to be developed and surprise listeners. The performers who join them in the festival are a community of like-minded artists with the common goal of injecting classical performance with something fresh and dazzling.

A major feature of the upcoming 2021 third International Re:fórmers Festival is combining classical music with other arts. The headliner of the concert portion of the festival is choreographer/dancer Jonah Bokaer, presenting a new work conceived with VitaDuo and pianist Polina Nazaykinskaya called Reverse Perspective. In addition, several outstanding European musicians will perform rare repertoire on the best stages of Moscow and St. Petersburg throughout the festival, as well as conduct a series of interactive master classes.

2021 festival performers:

  • B C Manjunath, percussion (India)
  • Jonah Bokaer, choreographer (USA)
  • Polina Osetinskaya, piano (Russia)
  • Nino Jvania, piano (Georgia)
  • Habanera Saxophone Quartet (France)
  • Elizaveta Miller, harpsichord (Russia)
